We all know January 1, 2012 will be “do over” day!!! But then, so was January 1, 2011, and
so will be January 1, 2013, if we live to see it. So, what will we do differently this year than
we have done in past years? What will we resolve that we have not already resolved? Or,
what will we resolve that we have resolved in the past, but failed to keep? Will you be
asking for any “do-over’s” this year?
We are challenged by our own selves more than we are challenged by most anything or
anyone else, aren’t we? We “undo” ourselves! We disappoint ourselves! We become
perplexed with ourselves! We don’t live up to the dreams and desires we aspire to
accomplish – or at least the dreams and desires we say we yearn for. We sound a lot like
the Apostle Paul, don't’ we?
In Romans 7 are recorded Paul’s words about our conflicting natures. The Message (The
words of Scripture in contemporary language, by Eugene Peterson) interprets Paul’s
message in a way that hits “the nail on the head.” (I might even say - “hit Annelle on the
head!”) What about you?” Do you relate to Paul’s words? They are:
What I don't understand about myself is that I decide one way, but then I act another,
doing things I absolutely despise. So if I can't be trusted to figure out what is best for
myself and then do it, it becomes obvious that God's command is necessary. But I need
something more! For if I know the law but still can't keep it, and if the power of sin within
me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help!
I realize that I don't have what it takes. I can will it, but I can't do it. I decide to do good, but
I don't really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as
they are, don't result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the
better of me every time. It happens so regularly that it's predictable. The moment I decide
to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God's commands, but it's pretty
obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I
least expect it, they take charge. I've tried everything and nothing helps. I'm at the end of
my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn't that the real question?
The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in
this life of contradictions where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind, but am
pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different.
We can’t use Paul’s words as our “excuse” to sin, though we might be “tempted” to do
so. But it does help our understanding of our dilemma to know that the struggle against
sin is not new. It’s been around a long time, and will be around long after our lives have
ended.
What we can do is to look for evidence of God at work in our lives and embrace God at
work in us. Again, Eugene Peterson, in The Message says it well. Recorded in Chapter 8
of Romans* are these words:
With the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah, that fateful dilemma is resolved. Those who enter
into Christ's being-here-for-us no longer have to live under a continuous, low-lying black
cloud. A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, like a strong wind, has
magnificently cleared the air, freeing you from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the
hands of sin and death.
God went for the jugular when he sent his own Son. He didn't deal with the problem as
something remote and unimportant. In his Son, Jesus, he personally took on the human
condition, entered the disordered mess of struggling humanity in order to set it right once
and for all. The law code, weakened as it always was by fractured human nature, could
never have done that. The law always ended up being used as a Band-Aid on sin instead
of a deep healing of it. And now what the law code asked for but we couldn't deliver is
accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts, simply embrace what the
Spirit is doing in us.
So, what is the Spirit doing: The Message says:
for you who welcome him, in whom he dwells—even though you still experience all the
limitations of sin—you yourself experience life on God's terms. It stands to reason, doesn't
it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life,
he'll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When
God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are
delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as
Christ's!
So, Happy New Year! As Paul says:
With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn't hesitate to put
everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the
worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn't gladly and freely
do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God's
chosen? Who would dare even to point a finger? The One who died for us—who
was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment
sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge
between us and Christ's love for us? There is no way!
I’d say we are starting the year off with very good news! Why not share
it?

Session Digest
A Stated Meeting of the Session of Peace Presbyterian Church (USA) of Fayetteville, North
Carolina, was called to order at 12:30 p.m. on November 13, 2011 in the Church
Conference room, with the following members, constituting a quorum, present:
Kenneth W. (Wayne) Blackburn, Jr; William A. (Bill) Chater; William C. (Bill) DeVane;
Sharon Schaub-Gosser; Katie D. Hayward; Susan C. Johnson; Martha R. Scott; Walter M.
(Walt) Swing; and Phyliss A. (Annelle) Waldron, Moderator. Also attending were Elders-
Elect: Wendy K. Britt, Robert S. Shirley and Carol K. Wilhelm.
The meeting opened with prayer by Annelle Waldron, who also gave the Devotion.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes of the September 18, 2011 Stated Session Meeting, the October 30, 2011
Called Session Meeting and the October 30, 2011 Called Meeting of the congregation were
previously distributed. The minutes of all three were approved as presented.
TREASURER’S REPORT:
Walt Swing reported that the church received a total of $14,931.69 and spent $16,347.02
during the period October 1 to October 31, 2011. As of October 31, 2011 the Operating
Checking Account balance was $610.87.
REPORTS FROM STANDING SESSIONAL COMMITTEES:
Building and Grounds: Bill DeVane reported. The committee is waiting for 1 more
proposal with respect to the ageing pipes and has scheduled a meeting for November 21,
2011.
Education and Nurture: Sharon Schaub-Gosser reported. She either has 2 children or
none in Sunday School and about 3-4 in Children’s Church.
Membership Growth and Development. Susan Johnson reported. She is pleased to
welcome William J. Love into membership.
Administration: Walt Swing reported. A proposed budget was distributed. On behalf of
the committee, a motion was made to increase Annelle’s compensation by 3% for
Calendar Year 2012. The motion was approved. Susan Johnson made a motion,
seconded by Sharon Schaub-Gosser, and carried to earmark a one-time gift of $100 to the
Monroe Camp & Retreat Center in the Local and Global Missions budget. Bill Chater
made a motion, seconded by Bill DeVane to amend the pledge to the Presbytery of Coastal
Carolina for Shared Mission Support in the Local and Global Missions budget from $8,400
per year to $4,200. The motion was approved with Sharon Schaub-Gosser dissenting.
Sharon Schaub-Gosser then made a motion, seconded by Martha Scott, and carried to
adopt the proposed budget, to include the foregoing amendments.
Local and Global Missions: Wayne Blackburn reported. Health kits will be received on
Sunday, December 18th. The Angel Tree will be in place on Sunday, November 20th. 39
Shoe boxes and over $100 in cash donations have been collected for Samaritan’s Purse.
Boxes of Stove-top stuffing for Fayetteville Urban Ministry are due November 28th. To-
date 34 boxes have been collected.
Worship Committee: Katie Hayward reported. Poinsettias will be in place by Sunday,
December 11th. The sacrament of the Lord’s Supper will be served on Christmas
Morning and again on January 8, 2012.
Fellowship Committee: Martha Scott reported. The Thanksgiving sign-up sheet is in
place. Additional supplies will be purchased prior to Thanksgiving. The committee will
be responsible for set-up, bread, beverages, and take-down.

Worship Services: In addition to regular worship services at Peace:
Gave the Memorial Service Meditation at the NC State Veteran’s
Home – Sept. 28th. Administered the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper on
Oct 2nd as previously authorized by session.
Led a Celebration of Life Service in memory of Det Milner – Nov 6th.
Preached Revival Services at Grove Presbyterian Church
Dunn, NC – Nov 6, 7, & 8th.
Led Wee Worship Services with Pre-school children each Tues & Wed
Other: Led the Adult Conference Room Sunday School Class weekly. Helped with
Capital Campaign Barbecue Plate Sale on Oct 7th. Made nursing home visits at Scotia
Village and Carolina Inn, home visits, and hospital visits at Cape Fear and V. A. hospital;
made phone calls of inquiry, and met with members and ministry colleagues at the office;
plus lunched with other members and ministry colleagues. Lunched with Friendship
Group on Nov 9th. Vacationed the week of Oct 23rd.
NEW BUSINESS: Sharon Schaub-Gosser made a motion, seconded by Wayne Blackburn
to hold the annual congregational meeting on Sunday, December 11, 2011 for the purpose
of approving changes to the pastor’s terms of call.
By common consent, the session agreed to the following meeting dates for the first six
months of 2012: Jan 8th, Feb 19th, Mar 18th, Apr 15th, May 13th, and Jun 10th.
An Elder Workshop and Called Session Meeting is scheduled for Wed, Nov 30, 2011 to
examine and vote on elders-elect and set a date for installation and/or ordination.
Wayne Blackburn has scheduled a meeting of the Nominating Committee for Wednesday,
November 16, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. for the purpose of filling the unexpired term of Elder,
Wayne Smith.
Annelle requested that anytime the “Elder on Duty” is securing the building after a service
or event that they drive around to the back of the building and pull on the kitchen entrance
door and pre-school entrance door from the outside to make sure they are locked.
Walt Swing made a motion, seconded by Susan Johnson and carried to approve Annelle’s
vacation request for the following days: Nov 22 and 23, 2011, Dec 28 and 29, 2011 to
complete her third week of vacation for 2011, and that she be permitted to take the unused
fourth week of 2011 vacation days one day at a time during 2012, as needed.
Walt Swing informed the session of a request from First Presbyterian Church of
Fayetteville, NC, for the transfer of membership of James Johnson, Melva Johnson, Brett
Johnson, and Tonya Johnson. Walt Swing then made a motion, seconded by Bill DeVane
to honor the request for transfer of those individuals effective November 6, 2011, and to
remove their names from the active membership roll. After considerable discussion and
vehement objections raised by Wayne Blackburn, Sharon Schaub-Gosser, Bill Chater and
Susan Johnson, the motion was approved with deep regret.
NEXT STATED MEETING: Sunday December 11, 2011—at 12:30 p.m. in the Church
Conference Room.
CLOSING PRAYER AND ADJOURNMENT:
On the motion of Sharon Schaub-Gosser, seconded by Bill DeVane, and carried, the
meeting adjourned at 2:10 p.m. Wayne Blackburn closed the meeting with prayer.

Local & Global
Drivers: Now we need to get Christabel to and from pre-school. As you know, Mary
Owusa awaits citizenship, so she cannot drive (nor does she have a car). Just as we
provide transportation for Mary and her girls to attend church, and, just as we provided
transportation for Gladys to get to preschool, we now need to provide transportation for
Christabel. There will be a sign up sheet on the Sign-Up Board. Christabel will come two
days a week - Tuesday and Thursday. Right now we have people signed-up to bring
Christabell to school on
Thursdays. So, that means we need someone for Tuesdays. If you can only commit week-
by-week – the sign up will continue to be on the board.
Congregational Care
This committee is primarily responsible for discharging the Church’s ministry of
compassion and pastoral oversight. The ministry includes, in cooperation with the
Minister, visitation of the sick and bereaved and all those who need sympathy and
encouragement in facing difficult circumstances.
Your Congregational Care Committee consists of Wayne Smith-Chairman, Ruth Johnson,
Linda Schaub, Grace DeVane, Kathryn McLamb, Hilde Tobler and Loretta Swing –
Committee Members.
PRESCHOOL NEWS
Church Newsletter Input from the Preschool
Dear Peace Church Family,
I hope everyone is enjoying a peaceful holiday season. Thank you so much for your
support of our Christmas Market. It is always wonderful to see members of our church
family in the crowd. The children did a terrific job and we are so proud of them. We are
pleased with the $500 we raised and look forward to spending it wisely to improve our
classrooms.
Our spring semester will begin on Monday, Jan 2, with two teacher workdays. The
children will return to class on Wed, Jan 4. We will explore a winter wonderland, learn all
about diversity, and have fun with transportation and our five senses during the month of
January. Lots of fun learning to come!!! J
The Preschool will be closed Monday, Jan 16 in observance of the MLK Jr. Holiday.
Registration for the 2012/13 school year is coming soon. Also we do currently have
several openings for the Spring semester.
